Building a new home is a massive undertaking; building that home green requires even more planning. Most people know that building a home with an array of shade trees on the property help keep utility bills down. There are five other important items to know before building your new environmentally friendly home.
Location is Everything
The number one consideration in building a green home is location. Many people neglect to consider the impact their neighborhood choice has on their environmentally friendly factor. Choosing a neighborhood that allows you to walk, use public transportation or a bicycle will increase your family’s green factor. The more your family is able to bike or walk, the less energy your family will consume.
Smaller and Smarter Home:
Design your home to be smaller and more efficient. Most people prefer intimate spaces over huge rooms. The housing trend has moved away from the super large home into more functional and smaller living quarters. A well designed home will have plenty of storage and living space for the entire family without the home being environmentally unfriendly. The smaller the new house is the less natural resources that will be required to build and sustain the home.
Environmentally Friendly Doors and Windows
The use of green door and windows will reduce the home’s energy usage. Install doors and windows that are eco-friendly and are made of recycled materials; such as aluminum, wood or plastic. They should all be designated Energy Star for optimal efficiency. Aesthetics do not have to suffer, as these doors and windows come in a variety of finishes and styles.
Utilize Eco-friendly Materials:

This type of paint comes in any color imaginable while being a friend to the environment. The use of energy efficient ceiling fans will help maintain a cool room while minimizing the home’s carbon footprint.
Save Electricity and Water:
Install only energy efficient appliances to aid in reducing the home’s energy usage. Install LED lights instead of standard light bulbs. Consider adding solar panels to your new home. Solar panels will help heat and cool your new home in the most energy efficient means possible. Solar panels will heat water by utilizing the natural power of the sun. Solar panel installation is a costly upfront investment; however, solar panels are the smartest investment a new homeowner can make.
Eliminate wasted water in your new home with a water recycling unit. One of these units will re-purpose leftover water for other uses. The recycled water is able to be used on house plants, in the garden or to wash your car.

Shopping Alone
Do you like to shop alone or you want to shop with your family or friends? Well, in my case I prefer to shop alone because I find it more convenient where I have the freedom to choose anything that I want and anywhere I go. I love shopping and comparing items from another shops and stores. Every time I shop, I always look for the nice style and design and of course its price tag.
I keep on looking for the best and nicest one and if I’m not satisfied, I will go to another store. If I have a companion specially when my daughter is with me, I couldn’t look and choose for more items because she will start complaining telling me that she’s hungry or she wants me to buy toys and the things that she like. When my hubby is with me, he will also complain telling me that he wants to go home. Grrr! He doesn’t like to go shopping that’s why I prefer to go shopping alone.
Missed Shopping
Its been awhile that I haven’t got the time to go shopping. But even if I have the time, I don’t have enough money to buy the things that I wanted to buy lol! I missed going around my favorite shopping place in Cogon where I usually go from one store to another. I am a thrifty shopper so every time I saw a nice blouse or sandals, I immediately check out its price tag so I could make a budget out from the extra money that I have in my wallet.
Its just my wants and not my need so I see to it I could buy some more of the things that I want to have. Bling-blings or accessories for example since I love wearing chandelier or hoop earrings, I usually buy different colors and styles so I could pair it with my clothes, shoes and bags. I will definitely go back into shopping when I have some extra money to buy with.
Buying School Supplies
School supplies are important and an essential part of an academic experience specially for your kids who are going to school this coming June. But school supplies can be expensive, right? You just have to remember that when you get the list of school supplies that you will need for the year, don’t just go out and buy everything on the list.
Look around your house first to see if there are any of the supplies lying around. When you go shopping for your school supplies, take your list with you. Keep your list handy and only buy what is on it such as notebook, pens, coloring book or even aurora paper shredder and you will save money on your school supplies.
